The beginning of my version of the Sherlock Holmes "Ugly Blanket." Credit: Trish Deneen |
I'm a huge fan of the Sherlock Holmes TV series from Granada TV during the '80s and '90s starring the marvelous Jeremy Brett. In one episode, Holmes occasionally drapes himself in a wool-looking crocheted blanket. It looks like one by granny square. One of the episodes you can see it in is The Musgrave Ritual.
My version is the same, but I stray a little bit from the granny square pattern that I learned as a kid. I begin with a chain four instead of six and create my circle to crochet my first square. The corners throughout the blanket have one single crochet in the center instead of the two that I learned. Also, I don't single crochet between the set's of three double crochet along the rows. This keeps the pattern looking tighter than your average granny square like the blanket in the episode.
One type of yarn used is Premier Yarns Anti-Pilling Everyday Superwash DK Merino Blend in the colors charcoal heather, bark, and heather gray. The green used is from Swish DK, and the color is called forest lake heather. I'm not sure from pictures of the original of all the colors that are included, but I'm using colors that my husband asked for as this is a gift for him.
I can't give you an exact amount yet, as I'm not sure if I calculated correctly. I created a gauge swatch and used a chart like this to order the yarn, but I'll post exact details when it's done. This probably won't be until around Yule. Honestly, I don't think it's ugly at all, but I like these colors together.
